Description
The Department of Art History is pleased to present a research talk by Sixtine Haye as part of the France IDC.
''Selling Modern Decorative Arts in Paris: the Edgar Brandt Gallery (1925-1933)''
Edgar Brandt (1880-1960) was a renowned French ironworker whose workshop was located on the boulevard Murat in Paris. From 1920 onwards, he established an exhibition space within his premises to display and sell his work. Following the 1925 International Exhibition of Modern and Industrial Decorative Arts, Brandt decided to open a gallery at 27 Boulevard Malesherbes, closer to the Parisian art gallery district. In this new venue, alongside his own creations, he actively promoted modern decorative arts by exhibiting works by artists such as Jean Dunand (1877-1942), Jean Puiforcat (1897-1945), Ivan Da Silva Bruhns (1881-1980), René Kieffer (1876-1963), and others. This research talk analyses the role of Edgar Brandt Gallery in the promotion and commercial distribution of modern decorative arts during the interwar period.
