About the gallery:
Founded in 1979, Corkin Gallery has a rich history as a driving force in the world of photography. Committed to moving art history forward, we champion significant contemporary and historical art across a spectrum of media including painting, sculpture, photography, and installation.
Corkin Gallery exhibits emerging and mid-career artists both local and international, taking their works to market.
About the placement:
Through the duration of this internship, the student will gain valuable experience in a commercial art gallery setting and expand their historical knowledge of art. Corkin Gallery has an extraordinary archive of historical and contemporary works alike and the gallery intern will have hands on experience in handling artwork and be able to immerse themselves in the collection. The Gallery Intern will have the opportunity to shadow and assist the gallery staff in all aspects of the gallery’s day-to-day operations, as well as short and long-term projects.
Responsibilities may include
- Social Media/communications: Assist in the design and creation of exciting weekly social media content and assisting in writing newsletters.
- Collections and Database: assisting with artwork cataloguing into a digital database
- Research and writing; Assist in writing about exhibitions, artists, and gallery events for press, social media, newsletters and the Corkin Gallery website.
- Exhibition Installation: Assist with installing exhibitions: Safe handling and storage of artworks, patching and painting walls, and hanging artworks.
- Assisting the Gallery with day-to-day administrative tasks.
Requirements:
Strong writing and organizational skills.
Special requirements for students applying to this placement: All applications to the Corkin Gallery internship must include a writing sample by the applicant. Class papers are acceptable as writing samples.
Timing or hours of placement: The placement is up to a maximum of 12-15 hours per week for 8 weeks during the first summer 2025 semester (May-June). Placement begins the week of May 5. The gallery hours are 10:00am-6:00pm, Tuesday to Saturday. Timing of the placement throughout the week to be discussed with the site supervisor.
Credit: Half credit (0.5). This internship is for pass/fail course credit at the University of Toronto through the Department of Art History. This is not a paid position.
