Undergraduate Scholarships and Awards

Faculty of Arts & Science Undergraduate Scholarships

The Faculty of Arts & Science offers over 300 in-course and admission scholarships to undergraduate students. Other scholarships are offered by Enrolment Services and by Colleges.

Most scholarships are awarded automatically, on the basis of cumulative grade point average (CGPA). Unless otherwise indicated, scholarships are available to both full- and part-time students. For most scholarships, the value varies from year to year, being the amount of interest earned on an endowed fund. Non-program-specific scholarships are categorized as Miscellaneous.

The notation OSOTF means that eligible students must meet the following conditions:

  • Canadian citizens or permanent residents
  • Ontario residents
  • demonstrate financial need by qualifying for OSAP/UTAPS
Scholarship Description
Department of Art History Undergraduate Scholarship in Art History and Visual Studies
  • Established through the donations of various donors.
  • (For Any Year) To be awarded to an undergraduate student in the Department of Art History on the basis of financial need. Academic merit may also be considered.

Dharma Master Chuk Mor Memorial Scholarship
  • Tin Yick Lung established this endowed scholarship in memory of Buddhist monk Chuk Mor (1913–2002) who was an educator and artist well known in the fields of Chinese poetry, Chinese painting and Chinese calligraphy.
  • (For Year II) The scholarship will be awarded to a student in a Major or Specialist Program in Art or Visual Studies. The student will be selected based on financial need and academic merit.
Fine Art Student Union Bursary
  • Established by the Fine Art Student Union.
  • To be awarded to undergraduate students on the basis of financial need. Academic merit may also be considered. Awarded to a student enrolled in the Specialist or Major Program in Fine Art History or Visual Program in Fine Art History or Visual Studies. The recipient will be randomly selected from the eligible applicants.

John Wolfe McColl Memorial Award in Art History and Visual Studies
  • Established by the Estate of the late John Wolfe McColl.
  • (For Year II/III) Two awards: one award for an outstanding student enrolled in the second or third year of the Specialist Programme in Art History, and one award for an outstanding student in enrolled in the second or third year of the Specialist Programme in Visual Studies.
J. Walter Graham Scholarship in Art History and Visual Studies
  • Established by the friends and colleagues of Professor J. Walter Graham.
  • (For Any Year) Awarded to a student in the Specialist Program in Art History in Visual Studies who writes the best essay in Greek and/or Archaeology. Financial need must be considered and academic merit will also be considered.

Kenneth Augustus Hemblen Memorial Award in Aegean Studies
  • Established by Mrs. Sarah M. Hemblen of Toronto.
  • (For Any Year) To be awarded to an outstanding undergraduate student (full-time or part-time) for the best essay in Aegean (Minoan, Mycenaean or Cycladic) studies. The student should be a Major/Specialist in Art History or some relevant Ancient Studies Program (e.g. through Classics or Near Eastern Studies).
Louis and Lisa Cheng Scholarship in Art History and Visual Studies
  • Established by Louis and Lisa Cheng.
  • (For Year II/III) To be awarded to a student who is enrolled in a Specialist or Major program offered by the Department of Art History. Financial need must be considered. The recipient must also have a high GPA of 3.3 (B+) as well as demonstrate involvement in the community.
Melanie Ross Bursary for Art History
  • Established by the family and friends of the late Melanie Ross.
  • (For Year II/III) To be awarded to a student enrolled in the Major or Specialist Program in Art History, on the basis of financial need.
Sandra Rotman Prize
  • Established by the friends of Sandra Rotman, to celebrate her commitment to Fine Art and to the University of Toronto.
  • (For Year IV) Awarded to a graduating student in the Specialist or Major Program in Art History or Visual Studies who has achieved the highest cumulative GPA in his/her undergraduate class.
Sidney Key Memorial Scholarship in Art History and Visual Studies
  • Established by the family and friends of the late Sydney Key.
  • (For Year III) Awarded to a student in the Specialist Program in Art History or Visual Studies. Financial need must be considered; academic merit will also be considered.

College Scholarships

Scholarships designated for students in the art history program in the Faculty of Arts & Science, St. George campus are specified below.

Scholarship Description
Cloister Educational Foundation of Toronto Awards (University College)
  • Established by the estate of Marjorie Moore (UC’47).
  • Awarded to University College students to assist with travel and living abroad for periods of up to one year. Students from the fields of Art, Archeology, Classics, History and Modern Languages will be eligible. Such students may be at any level of study. Special consideration will be given to students for whom a period abroad is important and an integral part of their education. Awards will vary in number and value; approximately $17,000 will be available annually.
Helen Frye Memorial Scholarship (Victoria College)
  • Established by the alumni of Victoria College and H Northrop Frye (1912–91) in 1987 in memory of the wife of Professor Frye, Helen (Kemp) Frye (1910–86) of the Victoria College Class of 1933, artist and art educator.
  • Awarded to a student with overall A standing who is enrolled in a Specialist or Major Program offered by the Department of Fine Art.
Jessie Macpherson Memorial Scholarship (Victoria College)
  • Established by friends and colleagues in 1996 in memory of Jessie Hall Knox Macpherson (1900–69) of the University College Class of 1923, Dean of Women at Victoria University 1934–63, member of the teaching staff in Ethics at Victoria College 1936–
  • Awarded to a female student with high overall A standing who is enrolled in a Specialist or Major Program in Philosophy, Fine Art History, or Music.
Mary Coyne Rowell Jackman Graduate Scholarship (Victoria College)
  • Established in 1997 by Nancy Ruth, President of Nancy’s Very Own Foundation in memory of her mother Mary Coyne Rowell Jackman, DLittS, LLD (1904–94) of the Victoria College Class of 1925. Mary Jackman’s father Newton Wesley Rowell (1867–1941), Chief Justice of Ontario 1936–38, was a member of the Board of Regents 1901–33; her mother Nellie (Langford) Rowell (1874–1968) was a member of the Victoria College Class of 1896; her aunt Mary Coyne Rowell (1870–1940) of the Class of 1898 was a member of the Department of French 1919–35; her uncle Arthur Leopold Langford (1862–1923) of the Class of 1884 was Registrar of Victoria University 1909–22; she herself, a lifelong supporter, presented works of art and gave her important collection of first editions of writers of the Bloomsbury Group to the Victoria University Library. Additional donors: the Ontario Student Opportunity Trust Fund; the University of Toronto Endowment Adjustment Fund.
  • Awarded to a female graduate of Victoria College for postgraduate study in Art, Literature, or Religion. Financial need must be demonstrated.
