Building a Museum: Perspectives on the Grand Egyptian Museum Project

The Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM), a long-running project on the Giza Plateau, has faced its ups and downs over the last 20 years. Dedicated to sharing the remarkable heritage of the ancient Egyptian civilisation for the advancement of knowledge and the nourishment of the human spirit, GEM is a unique cultural landscape that offers to redefine what a museum can be. As GEM enters the final phase of construction before its successful opening, it is a good time to explore the museum, its mission and the opportunities GEM offers when discussing museums, archaeology, heritage management and learning.

Zoe Mcquinn is the coordinator at the Royal Ontario Museum of Festival programs. After lecturing at the University of Toronto, Zoe took on the challenge of transforming ROM’s festival programs into a dynamic platform where arts, music, history and culture are explored. Currently, she is the Education Expert and Accessibility Advisor at Grand Egyptian Museum and joins us via Zoom from Giza.
