Description

The Toronto Public Library’s “Thought Exchange” series presents a talk featuring Prof. Elizabeth Legge:

Art and Scandal

Art causes scandals for many reasons, and provokes a range of consequences from censorship and funding cuts to destruction of the art in question. This program will take a deeper look at work that has caused offence due to its perceived obscenity, sacrilege, politics, or abstraction, amongst other things. Works by artists including Robert Mapplethorpe, Richard Serra, Maya Lin, Damien Hirst, Dread Scott, Sally Mann, and Chris Ofili raise questions of what we expect from art.
