PhD Positions Available for Students Focusing on France and French Art History

December 8, 2022 by Department of Art History

The Department of Art History at the University of Toronto is offering four PhD positions to students with a dedicated focus on France and French art history, as part of a cross-cultural exchange between France and Canada. Areas of study may include French art and its influence in or connection to Canada, France-Canada artistic relations, or French-Canadian visual culture.

The department’s five-year doctoral program follows the standard North American model of two years of training and three years of researching and writing a dissertation that contributes new advanced knowledge to the candidate’s field of study. Students will have opportunities to travel to France in every year of their program and spend the majority of their third and fourth years pursuing primary research in archives and museums there.

The department is able to offer funding in the amount of $50,000 CAD per year for five years, for a total of $250,000 per student, starting September 2023
