Opaloma Editorial Internship

About Opaloma:
Opaloma is a platform where art, culture and style meet.

Conceived of and crafted by award-winning Toronto-based writer, stylist, editor and brand strategist Odessa Paloma Parker, Opaloma celebrates creative expression in all its forms. The Opaloma newsletter, launched in 2022, has become a go-to resource for art appreciators interested in what’s new and notable in local and international galleries and cultural institutions, as well as notes on restaurants and retail scenes. The Opaloma website was introduced in 2024 to offer a space for long-form writing, etc. Public and private tours are offered through the Opaloma platform; most recently, Odessa has led tours at Art Toronto, Artist Project and Toronto Outdoor Art Fair.

Opaloma focuses largely on local contemporary cultural news including exhibition openings, artist interviews, and essays about particular topics in art. Featured artists include Marigold Santos, Sandra Meigs, Jordan King, Matthew Walton, Ehiko Odeh, and Kristofer Sakamoto-Marshall. And because of Odessa’s additional editorial work for Style Advisor (the subscription lifestyle publication of The Globe and Mail), she also has the opportunity to work on global art and style stories as well; for this role, she has interviewed artists including Nick Cave and Anne Low.

About the placement:
This internship will allow the student to gain valuable experience in art-writing and community-building capacities. They will be able to expand their knowledge of emerging and established Canadian artists, galleries, curators and programs. The hands-on experience of researching, transcribing, content making and back-end design work will provide them with a range of relevant skills they can use in various art careers across Canada and around the world.

The Editorial Intern will have the opportunity to largely work autonomously, as this is a remote opportunity with weekly meeting check-ins. On any given day, the Editorial Intern could be going to a gallery to film an interview between Odessa and an artist on camera, transcribing an interview and making quote recommendations, and attending an exclusive exhibition opening to capture social content.

Responsibilities & tasks may include:

  • Research: Assist in researching exhibitions and installations in Toronto; researching art content makers to advise on messaging points of differentiation for Opaloma; researching and note-making for tours
  • Transcribing: “Cleaning up” transcript documents and making notations of quotations that stand out for social media captions/pull quotes
  • Content creation: Filming video segments at various locations TBD around Toronto; photo editing for website and social media use; implementation of website pages (adding images, text, image captions) and social media posts
  • Administration: Assist in gallery/artist outreach for features; creation of and maintenance of gallery contact directory

Requirements: The intern should be independent and curious, have strong writing and organizational skills, and an interest in art journalism/content making, marketing or branding. The internship will take place remotely from within Toronto. Interns must use their own computer and any relevant editing software (Word, Google Drive, Photoshop, Illustrator). Access to additional operational accounts (Flodesk, Squarespace) will be given as needed.

Special skills: Copy editing/writing; photography/video content making and editing; particular interest in the intersection of fashion and fine art; driver with car an asset.

Timing or hours of placement: The placement is up to a maximum of 8-10 hours per week for 12 weeks during the fall 2025 semester (Sept-Dec). Flexible timing throughout the week. Placement begins the week of Sept. 2. Online hours for Odessa are 10am-4pm EST Monday-Friday with potential exceptions to be communicated with at least a week’s notice (i.e. events). Timing of the placement throughout the week to be discussed with the site supervisor.
