Rogers Art Advisory & The University Club of Toronto are looking for an intern to contribute to their Reimagining the Collection of the University Club of Toronto initiative.
About the organization:
Located on Toronto’s prestigious University Avenue, in the heart of the city, the University Club of Toronto is a private club housed in a cherished heritage building that is a retreat for members to dine, socialize and pursue intellectual and artistic enlightenment. It is a place where connections are forged; relationships are built and friendships are made. The Club is warm and welcoming; collegial and engaging.
The University Club has spent the past forty years building one of Canada’s most cohesive private collections of Canadian Art. The Club’s collection features pieces by The Group of Seven, their contemporaries (particularly by those who were invited to contribute to Group of Seven exhibitions), and the Canadian Group of Painters which followed in the 1930s. There are few collections devoted to their works on paper and it is these watercolours and drawings which make the University Club’s collection so unusual.
The goal of the “Reimagining the Collection” initiative is to document and properly manage the University Club of Toronto’s extensive art collection while making it a dynamic, living presence for our members, guests, and stakeholders. In today’s digital age, many of the artists, practices, and histories represented in the collection have faded from public awareness. UCT seeks to reinvigorate these essential cultural touchstones, placing the collection at the forefront for the breadth, depth, and significance of its works.
About the placement:
Connecting directly with the history of Toronto and Canada, our aim is to engage audiences through thoughtful interpretation and increased accessibility. By developing an interactive digital catalogue—activated by QR codes—we will spark curiosity, deepen knowledge, and encourage dialogue. In doing so, we continue the legacy of the Club, its collection, and its enduring role in Toronto’s cultural fabric.
The intern will work under the supervision and training of the Chair of the UCT Art Committee, Katlin Rogers (Rogers Art Advisory).
Tasks will include:
- cataloguing the art collection (including prints, drawings, paintings, and sculptures)
- handling art
- preparing condition reports
- digitizing documents related to the artworks (bills of sale, exhibition histories, insurance reports, etc.)
- data entry and database management
- assist with photography of the collection
- collate and prepare information for the interactive digital catalogue
The student may also have the opportunity to:
- assist with writing & research of the collection, as needed
- attend art-related events at the UCT
Timing or hours of placement: 8-10 hours per week/12 weeks, up to a maximum of 120 hours. Hours can be flexible throughout the week.
Credit: Half credit (0.5). This internship is for pass/fail course credit at the University of Toronto through the Department of Art History. Only University of Toronto students are eligible. This is not a paid position.
