c mag is looking for an editorial intern to assist with the production of one to two issues this fall.
About the organization:
C Magazine, established in 1984, is a contemporary art and criticism periodical that functions as a forum for significant ideas in art and its contexts. Each issue explores a theme that is singularly engaged with emerging and prevailing perspectives through original art writing, criticism, and artist projects. Our content focuses on the activities of contemporary art practitioners residing in Canada and Canadian practitioners living abroad—with an emphasis on those from Black, Indigenous, diasporic, and other equity-deserving communities—as well as on international practices and dialogues. We are committed to facilitating meaningful, pluralistic, interdisciplinary, historically-engaged, and imaginative conversations about art.
About the placement:
As valuable members of C’s team, interns play an important role in promoting and nurturing critical engagement with and knowledge of contemporary art, while gaining worthwhile practical and conceptual experience in the field of publishing. We are committed to ensuring an enjoyable, educational, and rewarding experience.
Tasks:
- Researches and obtains images and reproduction rights for print magazine; formats and edits captions according to the C Magazine Living Style Guide; participates in image selection process
- Administers contributor contracts
- Collects mailing addresses for complimentary copies
- Manages deadlines, communications, and follow-ups for all of the above
- Prepares PDFs of individual contributions and distributes them to the authors
- Prepares press reports (information about an artist’s or topic’s prior coverage) as necessary
- Assists in uploading online content to the website, including editorial texts and images
- Participates in discussions about future editorial content and print issues
- Assists with other administrative and research tasks as necessary
- Assists with programming as applicable
- Attends staff and/or editorial meetings as interested
- Other tasks relevant to intern’s specific career development
A demonstrable passion for contemporary art is required. Candidates must possess excellent research skills, and advanced writing and communication skills. A working knowledge of Mac OS X, MS Word and Excel, Slack, and Google Apps is beneficial, as is editorial experience in arts & culture (including DIY mediums).
Candidates must be able to work independently, with the supervision of the Editor, using their own computer.
The C Magazine office is located at 401 Richmond St W, Toronto, a fully accessible building. We work largely remotely. Work from the physical office is optional, but available during regular staff hours.
Timing or hours of placement: The placement is up to a maximum of 8-10 hours per week for 12 weeks during the fall 2025 semester (Sept-Dec). Flexible timing throughout the week. Placement begins the week of Sept. 2.
Credit: Half credit (0.5). This internship is for pass/fail course credit at the University of Toronto through the Department of Art History. Only University of Toronto students are eligible. This is not a paid position.
