Women in Artistic Life in the 17th Century

In the fields of art history, as well as exhibitions and museum acquisition policies, we strongly question today the place of women. Still, only a few names of women active in the artistic life of the 17th  century are known today, with the notable exception of Artemisia Gentileschi. Their role in artistic life is indeed difficult to grasp. Does it come down to discreet participation in the running of the workshops (women engravers, for example) or in specialized painting (painting of flowers etc.)?

This talk proposes to address two complementary aspects: the question of women artists and that of female commission.

When: Wednesday, April 3, 2024, 5-7pm
Where: Art History Common Room (SS 6029)

All are welcome!
